Get Smart or Get Hacked: Cybersecurity for Operational Technology
Join the Manufacturing Leadership Council virtually for an opportunity to take an inside look into MxD’s Chicago Innovation Center to learn about cybersecurity for operational technology.
As manufacturers continue to modernize facilities and implement digital technologies, the risk of cyberattack increases. According to a National Defense Industry Association study, over 35% of cyberattacks in the United States are targeted at manufacturers — more than any other business sector.
No matter a manufacturer’s size, industry or position within the supply chain, the threat of cyberattack is always present. Attacks on large companies can originate with the smaller, more vulnerable companies within their supply chains. Analyzing a company’s cybersecurity posture, therefore, requires examining its entire ecosystem in addition to looking at internal operations.
This reality, combined with the ever-growing number of cybersecurity standards and guidelines, can make the thought of cybersecurity implementation overwhelming for many companies. Since receiving its designation by the Department of Defense as the National Center for Cybersecurity in Manufacturing, MxD has brought resources and lessons learned directly to manufacturers facing these issues through workshops, webinars, workforce development programs and our 22,000-square-foot future factory located in Chicago.
MxD, which stands for “manufacturing times digital,” is where innovative manufacturers go to forge their futures. In partnership with DoD, MxD equips factories with the digital tools and expertise they need to begin building every part better than the last. As a result, its approximately 300 partners increase their productivity and win more business.
Walk Away With Actionable Insights
This plant tour will be followed by a panel discussion on MxD’s cybersecurity in manufacturing and walk away with actionable insights, including:
Operational technology-based demonstrations of all five functions of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) cybersecurity framework: Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, and Recover
Examples of methods, tools, and software you can implement on your factory floor to prevent cyber-attacks
A description of critical elements of a cybersecurity incident response plan

MxD’s innovation center is located just north of downtown Chicago. in 2018, MxD was designated as the National Center for Cybersecurity in Manufacturing by the Department of Defense with a mission to help secure America’s manufacturing supply chains. In accordance with that mission, MxD, along with help from our members, has designed and built cybersecurity demonstration areas within our factory.

The Cyber Wall Testbed demonstrates various cyber-attacks on a factory’s operational technology systems and how to protect against these attacks. The Identify and Protect areas of the NIST cybersecurity framework are reviewed in a manufacturing setting.

Beyond its cybersecurity areas, MxD’s 22,000 square-foot manufacturing floor allows for testing and demonstration of an array of digital manufacturing concepts, a selection of which were covered in its first virtual tour with MLC.

MxD’s Cyber Platform covers the remaining areas of NIST’s cybersecurity framework, demonstrating how to Detect, Respond, and Recover from a cyber intrusion.
